Programs Available At Explore Park

Our goal is to provide everyone a chance to recreate, learn and explore. We've started small to allow for the learning curve that will take place as we begin operations at Explore Park. Browse all of Roanoke County's recreation programs online, or check out the latest edition of Explore Recreation Magazine. Our Park will continue to grow as we expand our camps and program offerings at Explore Park, so keep your eyes and ears open for further opportunities to explore your world!

Public Recreation Opportunities At Explore Park

Mountain Bike Trail System
Virginia’s Explore Park prides itself in the variety of its outdoor recreational offerings. The Mountain Bike Trail System encompasses 9 miles of varied grade trails designed to meet International Mountain Bicycling Association environmentally friendly standards. The trails contain hilly, mountainous terrain with off-camber straightaways, whoops, plenty of climbs and fast drops. The trails are under a canopy of trees for a shady ride and there is a wide variety of vegetation and wildlife.

Explore Park offers miles of hiking on the mountain bike trails, along the Roanoke River Parkway spur road off the Blue Ridge Parkway, or in the hospitality plaza area of the park. If the you wishes to include a piece of education on their hike, the Park offers the Society of American Foresters Trail. This trail begins at the far end of the Brugh Tavern parking lot in Explore Park. This is an easy hike of .65 miles with two moderate inclines.

Picnic Areas
Bring your picnic, chairs, or a blanket and enjoy the natural setting of Explore Park. Several picnic tables are available along the edge of the parking lot for the Brugh Tavern.

Rutrough Point River Access
If water sports are more appealing you may participate in canoeing, kayaking, or fishing on the Roanoke River. Explore Park is an excellent launch point for a voyage down the river to Smith Mountain Lake. The float from Back Creek to Hardy Bridge at Smith Mountain Lake is seven miles. Rutrough Point is located at the end of Rutrough Rd. $2.00 per person payable on site at the fee drop post. Fishing is also enjoyable year ‘round. The Point – at the confluence of Back Creek and the Roanoke River – is a local favorite for catching stripers, catfish, and bass. Virginia Fishing Licenses are required, but are not available for purchase at Explore Park. For information on fishing licenses, visit the Virginia Department of Game & Inland Fisheries web site at
